Influence of pions and hyperons on stellar black hole formation

2013

We present numerical simulations of stellar core-collapse with spherically symmetric, general relativistic hydrodynamics up to black hole formation. Using the CoCoNuT code, with a newly developed grey leakage scheme for the neutrino treatment, we investigate the effects of including pions and \Lambda-hyperons into the equation of state at high densities and temperatures on the black hole formation process. Results show non-negligible differences between the models with reference equation of state without any additional particles and models with the extended ones. For the latter, the maximum masses supported by the proto-neutron star are smaller and the collapse to a black hole occurs earlie…

Geo-neutrino results with Borexino

2015

International audience; Borexino is a liquid scintillator detector primary designed to observe solar neutrinos. Due to its low background level as well as its position in a nuclear free country, Italy, Borexino is also sensitive to geo-neutrinos. Borexino is leading this interdisciplinary field of neutrino geoscience by studying electron antineutrinos which are emitted from the decay of radioactive isotopes present in the crust and the mantle of the Earth. With 2056 days of data taken between December 2007 and March 2015, Borexino observed 77 antineutrino candidates. If we assume a chondritic Th/U mass ratio of 3.9, the number of geo-neutrino events is found to be 23.7(+6.5) (-5.7)(stat) (+…

Tall Tales for a Mass Audience: Dutch Penny Prints and Spanish Aleluyas in Comparative Perspective

2021

Abstract In this article we compare Dutch penny prints with Spanish Aleluyas, focusing on three specific functions of this premodern mass medium: popularising and adapting theatre plays; standardising (folk/fairy) tales; adapting and popularising literary classics. Via these functions we address the discrepancies between the two countries considering the materiality of the penny prints, the growth of the production, but also the transition from a predominantly religious, towards a more profane content. Striking was the lack of educative and edifying initiatives in Spain in contrast to the Dutch ideological strategies. We observed some interesting similarities as well. Although in both count…

Isotope shifts and hyperfine structure in the transitions of stable calcium isotopes and calcium-41

1998

Isotope shifts and hyperfine structure in the 4s2 1S0 → 4s4p 1P1 and 4s2 1S0 → 4s4d 1D2 transitions of calcium have been measured with high-precision laser spectroscopy. Calcium atoms in an atomic beam were excited with single-frequency cw dye and titanium sapphire lasers and then photoionized with the 363.8 nm or 514.5 nm line of an argon ion laser. The resulting ions were analyzed and detected with a quadrupole mass spectrometer. Isotope shifts for all stable calcium isotopes and the radionuclide 41Ca have been measured in both transitions. The corresponding field shift and specific mass shift coefficients as well as hyperfine structure constants for the isotopes 41, 43Ca have been derive…

Ultratrace analysis of calcium with high isotopic selectivity by diodelaser resonance ionisation mass spectrometry

1997

A resonance ionisation mass spectrometer for the ultratrace determination of calcium isotopes is presented. It achieves high overall efficiency, ultra-high isotopic abundance sensitivity of more than 1010 and complete suppression of isobars. The system can be used for isotope ratio studies on stable and long-lived trace isotopes with the final goal of radiodating via 41Ca-determination. For the different applications optical one-, two- or three-step resonance excitation and subsequent ionisation is applied using simple and inexpensive diodelasers. Additional mass analysis is accomplished in a commercial quadrupole mass spectrometer. The experimental set-up and first results on synthetical a…

Global distributions of diazotrophs Gamma-A nifH genes abundance - Depth integrated values computed from a collection of source datasets - Contributi…

2013

The MAREDAT atlas covers 11 types of plankton, ranging in size from bacteria to jellyfish. Together, these plankton groups determine the health and productivity of the global ocean and play a vital role in the global carbon cycle. Working within a uniform and consistent spatial and depth grid (map) of the global ocean, the researchers compiled thousands and tens of thousands of data points to identify regions of plankton abundance and scarcity as well as areas of data abundance and scarcity. At many of the grid points, the MAREDAT team accomplished the difficult conversion from abundance (numbers of organisms) to biomass (carbon mass of organisms). The MAREDAT atlas provides an unprecedente…

Drawing the Materials Balance for an MBT cycle from Routine Process Measures in a Plant located in Venice

2007

An observation term was carried on in an MBT plant owned and run by a public Company to treat MSW left by separate collection. All observations and measurements were made without interfering with the ordinary operation rules, in order to assess the efficiency of one process cycle for a given batch of waste. Analytical data came from both a) process instruments and b) physical analysis of a batch of waste entering / exiting from a selected bio-cell. From the process mass losses (about 37% – including moisture evaporation – in that single process cycle) the theoretical amounts of water and carbon dioxide produced by biodegradation were calculated. A verification of the results was tried throu…

A DERIVATION OF THE VLASOV-NAVIER-STOKES MODEL FOR AEROSOL FLOWS FROM KINETIC THEORY

2016

This article proposes a derivation of the Vlasov-Navier-Stokes system for spray/aerosol flows. The distribution function of the dispersed phase is governed by a Vlasov-equation, while the velocity field of the propellant satisfies the Navier-Stokes equations for incompressible fluids. The dynamics of the dispersed phase and of the propellant are coupled through the drag force exerted by the propellant on the dispersed phase. We present a formal derivation of this model from a multiphase Boltzmann system for a binary gaseous mixture, involving the droplets/dust particles in the dispersed phase as one species, and the gas molecules as the other species. Under suitable assumptions on the colli…
